Talk bio
I’ve spent most of my career working in news. I’m also a conference organizer of csv, conf, PyCon Canada and PyCon US, and previously, a code instructor with The Carpentries and Investigative Editors and Reporters.
I’m a PSF Fellow, and recipient of the Python Software Foundation Community Service Award in 2020.
When I’m not staring at my laptop, I also enjoy cycling, livestreaming and has accidentally build my own TV control room at home.
I currently live in Toronto, Canada where I help out with Python Toronto and PyLadies Toronto.
Work bio
Based in Toronto, Elaine has spent over 15 years working in the newsroom and has been a news writer, a chase producer, writing code as a developer and has directed live breaking news newcasts. Their work has led to numerous nominations for innovation and overall digital excellence.
As CBC News’ first streaming producer, their work sits at the intersection of editorial strategy, live video operations, and technical problem-solving, supporting the ongoing evolution of how CBC News produces and distributes digital video and was instrumental in the launch of CBC News’ first 16 FAST (Free ad-supported television) channels.
Outside of the newsroom, Elaine is a leader in the global tech community. They have served as the Conference Chair for PyCon US, the world’s largest Python (language) conference, and was elected a Fellow of the Python Software Foundation for their contributions to strengthening the ever-growing community.
Driven by a passion for “tech for good”, Elaine is a dedicated mentor who believes anyone can learn to code and is always happy to provide feedback on Python projects. In their spare time, Elaine is usually trying to perfect a “multi-cam livestream-in-a-backpack” build, or automating their home, much to the protest of their cats, who still prefers that mealtime stay human-driven.
